Frederick Rhodes, Age 27

Private, 18176, 7th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

Frederick was the son of Arthur and Emma Rhodes of Old Park and had at some point of time married Annie who at the time of the full casualty roll of honour being written was resident at 5 Hollinswood.

Frederick fell in action at the start of the second major push during the battle of the Somme when during the hours of darkness on the night of l3th/l4th July 1916, British forces moved to predetermined positions in No-Mans-Land and after a barrage had crashed down onto the German frontline on the Bazentin Ridge attacked at 3.30am at dawn of the 14th July.

The 7th KSLI along with the 8th Eat Yorkshires led the attack in their section of the front and after hard fighting the objectives were taken but not without severe casualties with the 7th losing 8 officers and 163 men killed with a further 7 Officers and 294 men wounded, these losses practically wiped out what was left of the original battalion.

Frederick was one of the men killed that morning in July 1916 and his body never being found his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial Pier/Face 12A -12D

Frederick was born at Old Park and was Christened on the 16th Aug 1888 at Malinslee, Shropshire, and so was his older brother Arthur on 31st Dec 1885, the family move, and in 1891 and 1901 were living at Duke Street, St Georges, Frederick aged 2(1891) and 12(1901), in the last quarter of 1897 Frederick’s mother Emily died, Frederick’s father got married to Martha Bailey in the last quarter 1897?

Frederick married Annie Hayward Oct-Nov-Dec 1909, and in 1911 they were living with Annie’s parents at 7 Albion Street, St Georges, on the 7th Dec 1912 their daughter Florence Vera Rhodes was born, and on the 4th Feb 1915 their second daughter Gladys Emily Rhodes was born, Frederick's widow Annie, in 1917 was receiving Frederick’s army pension and was living at 5, Furnace Road, Snedshill, Annie remarried in 1919 and became Annie Vickers.
